For some people living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), it can take years to receive a diagnosis – one study even reported an average diagnosis delay of about eight years.
The course of AS can vary, and people don't necessarily experience the same signs and symptoms, which is why it’s important to understand the hallmark features of AS and speak with a rheumatologist.
In this episode, rheumatologist Lianne Gensler discusses common symptoms of the disease and what those living with lower back pain and stiffness that lasts three or more months, among other features, should look for. Her husband Scot, an entrepreneur living with AS, offers his thoughts on how learning more about the disease can help with obtaining a correct diagnosis and optimal care.
In another episode, Lianne and Scot also speak with Dan about managing physical health and AS, including some good stretches and other helpful tips. Watch for more episodes of This AS Life Live! season 2.
