Hi, I’m Dan Reynolds, lead singer of the rock band Imagine Dragons. I’m excited to join the This AS Life community and share a little bit about myself and my story.
However, my story is only one of many. There are hundreds of thousands more stories that are waiting to be told. That’s why I’ve partnered with the Spondylitis Association of America and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to launch This AS Life Live!, the first interactive talk show for patients with AS by patients with AS. In each episode, I will interview a different person living with AS, focusing on unique aspects of their daily life with the disease, such as exercise, relationships, work, and doctor visits.
A bit about me
I come from a large family with a history of autoimmune diseases, including AS. It has impacted each of them in a slightly different way, but appeared around the same time – in their early 20s. My oldest brother was diagnosed first, two years later another brother, and then me.
My symptoms came out of nowhere. I remember running with my wife down Bronson Canyon when all of a sudden, I had this strange pain that got progressively worse over the next few days. At its peak, I would wake up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain; it felt as if someone was taking an electric drill to my back and joints. What’s worse was that this was around the time my band was really starting to take off. For someone who makes a living running around onstage for hours at a time, night in and night out, AS wasn’t something I could just muscle through.
Why I joined This AS Life Live!
I’m stoked to be part of this new series to help bring the realities of AS patients to life. The challenges I have faced are what drive my passion to discuss my experiences and be a part of the larger AS patient community. I hope that This AS Life Live! will provide much-needed information and support to patients and their caregivers in an entertaining and informative way.
